The Power of Words

Friday, May 31, 2019 • Zachary Will • General
This week's message was delivered by Zach Will. It was a powerful message about how our belief in words, good or bad, gives them power!

I was reading over the story about Jacob stealing his brother's Esau's blessing from their father Issac. And it made me realized how important words were. Like they believed so much that if their father said (to paraphrase) "You're gonna have a good life", that they would. In fact they believed this so much that Jacob pretended to be Esau and when Esau found out, he wanted to kill his brother (like literally) and Jacob had to run away.

Whether this blessing had a spiritual or prophetic element to it, it still helps us understand how important our words to one another are. But the Bible goes one step further into our thoughts. In Psalm 62:4 it says, "They bless with [the words of] their mouth, but inwardly they curse". This shows that not only can thoughts curse or bless others but they are, dare I say, more important than what we actually say.

It turns out that this is actually a real scientific effect called the Pygmalion Effect. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4aN5TbGW5JA) In which our expectations effects the actual results of those around us.

Who knew that our thoughts and words had the ability to either bless or curse the lives of those around us. When you think of the business world and how leadership conferences tell bosses to thank and encourage their employees instead of belittling them. Think of how little time and effort it takes to say positive words to another person, but it can make a huge difference.

You might say why should I put the extra effort into encouraging others?

"The generous man [is a source of blessing and] shall be prosperous and enriched, And he who waters will himself [reeping the generosity he has sown]" (Proverbs 11:25)

It just so happens that when we bless others with the words that we speak to them, they bless us back. Likewise curses are often met back with curses. But Jesus said in Luke 6:28, "bless those who curse you". In my experience, that when you return a compliment to an insult, the person's who outlook on you changes. They often freeze confused and sometimes even begin to compliment you right back. It's amazing the power of positive words (aka blessings).

Another lesson we can take from this story is that amount you believe in words are the power that they possess. For example if I don't believe in the bible at all, then you telling me that you can "do all things through Christ who strengthens me", will have no effect on me. But if I have a deep belief in God and the truth of the bible, then those words will greatly comfort me in distress. In the story of Jacob and Esau, Esau could've chosen to place little power of his brother's blessing and word equally hard and succeed, but instead he filled his thoughts with envy and gave it more power than it deserved.

"Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable-if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise-dwell on these things." Phil 4:8

We also will curse ourselves many times. We place ourselves in a box, creating a self-fulling prophecy. We'll say something like "I just not good a talking to people" or "I'm not a good public speaker" or "I'm not very smart", etc.

These things are obviously all lies. While it may hold some truth that you may need to improve in an area, it's very easy to get sucked into the idea that these lies are just who you are. But it's not part of your personality, these things are skills and parts of your life that you improve. One of the biggest lies the devil wants you to believe is that it's impossible to change who you are.

That's why the word always tells us, "just be yourself". While you shouldn't fake who you are just to fit in, it's also used as a lie to keep you from growing into who God wants you too be. Because it's God's will that you grow deeper in skills, in fruits of the spirit, over fear, over sins and "personality quirks". God loves you where your at, but he would never want you to stay there.

It's God's will that "we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:18 AMP) As Jesus followers, we aren't suppose to stay the way that we are but to be transformed to be more and more like Christ.

Thank you Zachary your video message was incredible and your blog blew my mind. I will read that and reread it. So rich in content and depth. I love your final sentence that as Jesus followers we are not supposed to stay the same but be transformed to be more like Jesus. But also to always be your self and not fake it. I also loved how you struck down the notion of how we criticize ourselves These things are obviously all lies.
Then you boldly followed it up, in the very next sentence with what I thought was very profound and truthful.
Your blog should be the Christian Headline for all to read... a 10 part series... it is so spiritual and deep and clear.

Thank you Zach

So true...

This message was deep, Zach. Never thought of how the power of words is proportional to how much we believe in the source of them! Can't wait to hear more messages from you.
